Term 2 Week 1 Weekend Assignments
Dear 5B,
here are the tasks to be done for the weekend (Friday-Sunday). Plan your time well and space out your work!
1. Composition
Today, the following resources have been given out to you:
Assignment 1 : Using the "Symbols" handout, decode the errors you've made and do your corrections on a piece of writing paper. Alternatively, you can type it out and print it and hand in as well.
2. Synthesis Exercises
I have returned Exercises 4 & 5 to you today.
Assignment 2:
(a) Look through your mistakes and write down next to the question , the error you made.
(e.g. Error: spelt "plans" instead of "plains"
or
Error: used the wrong form of the word (wrote "incompetent" instead of "incompetence")
and so on...)
(b) Refer to the answers posted here and complete your corrections. If there is insufficient space on your exercise, do your corrections on a piece of writing paper.
Synthesis Ex 4
1. Due to the fact that there was a mountain of work to plough through, everyone had to work overtime.
2. Janice went on a diet because she felt she had been overeating.
3. The once beautiful garden is now a mess because of neglect.
4. We did not have our tennis lesson today as the coach did not turn up.
5. Tessa could not reach the top shelf because she was too short.
6. Due to his incompetence, Mr Choy was fired by the boss.
7. As Derrick wanted to avoid getting into trouble with the law, he decided to distance himself from the gang.
8. Lily was late for school because the faulty alarm clock did not ring.
9. Because of Simon's bad breath, Mr Ong recommended that he see a dentist.
10. The valleys and plains were flooded because of the raging storms.
Synthesis Ex 5
1. The fisherman set out to sea although the weather was terrible.
2. Even though the puppy is small, it is very aggressive.
3. The car's air-conditioning is not working well , furthermore, its front wheels are worn.
4. The flat is spacious, moreover, it is affordable.
5. Old Miss Leong is not wealthy enough to travel to Europe, moreover, she is not strong enough.
6. Although Jared has a university degree , he has been unable to find a decent job.
7. Mr Tang was ecstatic even though he won the consolation prize in the lucky draw.
8. Diana is a talented actress, moreover, she is an experienced host.
9. The article is full of exaggerations, furthermore, the facts in it are unproven.
10. Even though the archer was blindfolded, he shot a bull's eye.
To summarise...

- Sample Composition (Fear) - based on the narrative plan, I came up with a compo to show you how to apply the plan into your writing. Read it, reflect and bring it with you next week.

Holiday Assignments
Dear 5B,
For the holidays,
Here are your tasks...
English :
1. Compo #3 (narrative plan AND actual composition) - u can use the words in your Word Wednesday Sketchbook to replace words such as "said"
2. Mconline Tasks ( log in and you should see the assignment)
Maths :
( Mrs Tan would have informed you.)
Science :
Extension Activity- Come up with an experimental design and try out during the holidays ( as explained by Mrs Khan)

Well-deserved Rest & Relaxation!
On Friday (14 Mar 2014),
The following were given out
- CA1 progress cards
- Term 2 EL spelling list
- EL compo 3 question paper and narrative plan
- One & Only Ivan ( please write your name clearly on the cover) book : enjoy reading!
- Conversation Cards & Competition Flyer (besides using the cards for the competition, do use them to engage in meaningful conversation with your parents , grandparents and family! I'm sure you will enjoy the conversation that follows. After all, nothing like spending quality time with the family right? ;))
